Trails going to the dogs in February
space
The “County of Trails” is going to the dogs.

With plenty of snow on the ground and a bit more in the forecast, local sled dog enthusiasts and spectators are marking their calendars for the Langlade County Culver’s Trailblazer Challenge, slated Feb. 15 and 16 starting and finishing in Antigo’s north side.

The two-days of racing, with categories for various sized teams and distances, wind through the farm fields and hills surrounding Antigo, allowing for some one-of-a-kind viewing opportunities for spectators to see the teams performing up close. In just a few short years, they have become a favorite with racers on the Wisconsin Trailblazers Sled Dog Club circuit.

Langlade County has become known as a Mecca for sled dog racers and trainers, with miles and miles of trails for training, its own race, and even a winter site dedicated to all-things mushing—the Crocker Hills Sled Dog Training Trails off Fraley Road in Elton.

The Langlade County Sled Dog Club recently hosted a group of enthusiastic young people from Green Bay at the trails, sharing educational information about types of dogs used for a team, training and caring for the canines and stories from the trail including details from the Iditarod to dryland events.

A highlight of the day was when Abby Heistad of White Lake did a skijoring demonstration which included harnessing a couple young dogs and taking them out for a training run.

The students also got to witness the running of a team of sprint racing dogs; learned to harness the dogs and drive a sled; and enjoyed the thrilling experience of riding the runners behind small teams of dogs.

The day also included a shared meal and a bonfire for warming and s’mores.

Sled dog racing across the north kicks off on Jan. 25 and 26 with the Merrill Winterfest Sled Dog Race followed by the Midwest American Championship in Kalkasa, Mich. on Jan. 31 through Feb. 2.

The Three Bear Sled Dog Race follows in Land O’Lakes on Feb. 8 and 9 followed by Antigo’s Culver’s event.

The season concludes with the Willow Springs Round Barn Sled Dig Rally in Wausau on Feb. 22 and 23.
