Nagel gathers hat trick as Robins defeat Mosinee 7-2
space
The Red Robin boys hockey team earned its 10th win of the season Thursday as they defeated the Indians 7-2 in Mosinee.

“As of late, on the road, we have been able to stay out of the box and tonight followed suit,” Antigo coach Matt Borneman said of the team’s performance. “Only having to kill two penalties is a big part of the blueprint for controlling games.”

And control is exactly what Antigo did on the ice. The Indians may have gotten the first shot of the night with a goal at 8:29 in the first period by Zach Pyan, but it was all Antigo after that.

In less than a 60 second period, the Robins took the lead 2-1 with shots by Alex Nagel and Kyle West. Assisting in the process were Elijah Wickersheim, Trevor Seis, Brian Bartletti and Matt Wolter.

Heading into the second period, Mosinee managed to sandwich a goal in between Wickersheim’s tally at 3:41 and Nagel’s at 10:31, his second of the night.

Topping the Indians 4-2, the Antigo skaters didn’t slow their pace as they fired 13 pucks at Mosinee’s goaltender Nick Rogers with three slipping past his glove.

Wickersheim notched his second score of the contest a mere 58 seconds into the final round. Jed Weix and Nagel gave the feed. With a defensive battle ensuing, it took Nagel until the 14:29 mark to earn his hat trick as Wickersheim provided the assistance.

The Robins’ final tally of the night came off the stick of Wolter as he lit the lamp at the 16:36 mark with the power play goal.

“I am very pleased with our new-found control and discipline, we need to continue on this path moving forward,” Borneman stated. “Nagel, Wickersheim and Weix had a big night. Their line continues to impress and play well. (Ryan) Schmidt did a great job bailing us out of the second period.”

Playing in net for Antigo, Schmidt posted 19 saves in the win.

Now 10-1-2 overall, Antigo is 4-1 in the Great Northern Conference as it hosts Rhinelander Tuesday.
