Robin skaters come out with 4-all tie versus Spartans|
The Antigo boys varsity hockey team traveled to Somerset for a non-conference game and ended up tying 4-4 in overtime on Saturday.
Antigo was able to score the lone goal of the first period at the 15:08 mark. Bailey Olson scored and was assisted by Blake Kirsch to end the first period with the advantage of 1-0.
Going into the second period with the lead, Antigo scored with a power play advantage at the 5:32 mark. Matt Wolter’s goal was assisted by Jackson Charlesworth and Alex Nagel.
Although the Robins had the lead, the Spartans came back fast and scored three goals before the second period ended taking a 3-2 lead.
“Good teams can make you pay with one mistake in a second, when you let down your guard and have a five minute mental lapse, you can get buried with an astronomical amount of goals. In our case, we got lucky, and it was only three,” head coach Matt Bornemann said.
Going into the third period, Somerset scored once again, but Antigo came back and scored twice before heading into overtime. Antigo’s Arin VerHagen scored with an assist by Olson at the 10:41 mark.
The final goal for Antigo was by Elijah Wickersheim assisted by Jed Weix and Nagel at the 11:41 mark tying up the game in regulation.
“We responded solidly in the third, one of our best periods of the season. We fought back and found out what kind of a team we can be. Our efforts fell short in completing the comeback, but it wasn't because we didn't generate the scoring opportunities. With another game, we can bring a lot of learning moments to continue moving forward ,” Bornemann added.
Although they played in over-time, neither team was able to score, thus resulting in a tie.
Antigo’s goaltender Ben Bartletti had a total of 25 saves.
Antigo will travel to Tomahawk for a GNC game Tuesday. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
