Brittney Wald scores 24 as Robins hold off Crandon 46-33

Long-shot whiz Brittney Wald aced five three-pointers en route to scoring a game-high 24 points Thursday as the Lady Robin basketball team clipped the Crandon Cardinals 46-33.

The non-league matchup was the first for the Antigo crew since before the holiday break and earned the team its third win of the 2013-14 season. Crandon, stemming from the Northern Lakes Conference, dropped to 4-3.

The game, in its essence, was a tale of two halves — and luckily for Red Robin fans, the story’s ending was better than its beginning.

“Defensively, we held our ground but offensively, we turned the ball over way too many times,” Robin coach Dennis Duchac said on his team’s early-game performance.

Managing to put up only a baker’s dozen before the half-time break yet still only be down by three 16-13, Antigo exceeded that number in each of the third and fourth quarters to outscore its guests 33-17 in the final 16 minutes of play to claim the win.

“Crandon is pretty scrappy and physical inside and we had a little trouble with that early on,” Duchac said, adding that first half turnovers, many of them unforced, could have been its undoing.

“We took much better care of the ball in the second half but we can’t dig ourselves into a hole like we did,” he said.

Shooting 16-for-43 (37 percent) from the field as a team, Wald (8-17, 3-4) made good on half of them including two from three-point range in the first half and three more in the second to finish as Antigo’s lone double-digit scorer.

Mikayla Nelson added eight to the mix followed by Mandy Petts with five, Chelsea Payant, four, Steph Hanke, three and Tasha Voytovich, two.

“I think Crandon tried to take away Steph but they didn’t realize we had another big shooter in Brittney,” Duchac said, adding that the senior is willing to do anything the coaches ask of her on the floor.

“Mandy also had a couple big shots for us and Mikayla came up big in the fourth quarter,” he added.

Sara Cottrell finished with 15 to lead the Cardinals. Celia Space and Amira Erdmann both had five while Abby Ostrowski and Brianna Perry both scored four. As a team, Crandon shot 13-for-36 (36 percent) from the field and were 5-for-11 at the line.

Antigo shot 8-for-12 from the stripe and won the war on rebounds, 30-12. Hanke collected nine to lead the Robins on the boards.

Antigo will return to league play Tuesday when the Robins host the 6-2 Mosinee Indians.
