Continuing its stellar season, the Wittenberg-Birnamwood wrestling team showed it had what it takes on the mats as it won the Shawano Holiday Classic Saturday with a team total of 386 points, edging out second place Coleman by six.
“The boys came ready to wrestle today,” Charger coach Troy Ostrowski noted.
Standing top on the podium for Witt-Birn were Stetson Potrykus at 106 pounds, Ben Vosters at 120, Braxton Potrykus at 160, Hunter Kreger at 182 and August Peplinski at 195.
Stetson Potrykus earned his title after defeating Aiden Wusterbarth of Oconto with a 8-2 decision. Vosters took a 10-4 decision over Garrett Siolka of Bonduel in his championship match to place first while Braxton Potrykus pinned Dexter Karban of Coleman in 3:13.
Kreger placed first after a close 3-2 decision against Adam Woebbeking of Rhinelander and Pelpinski took 45 seconds to pin David Meza of Berlin to win his bracket.
Bobby Uttecht at 132 and Alex Peplinski at 170 finished in second place in their respective brackets while John White Wing at 285 finished in third.
“We knew it would be tight not having three of our starters in the line-up today, but it worked out for us,” Ostrowski said.
Others competing but not placing for Wittenberg-Birnamwood were, Zach Urquhart at 113, Gavin Czewwonka at 126, Jesse Sprague at 138, T.J. Johnson at 145, Griffin Magee at 152 and Nick Stringfellow at 220.
The Chargers will really test their moves as they compete Friday and Saturday at Oshkosh on the Water held at the UW-Oshkosh Kolf Sports Center. First matches are set to begin at 10 a.m. Friday.
