Elcho's Makayla Raith scores 20 to break 1,000 career point mark
space
Needing only 17 points to accomplish one goal, Elcho’s Makayla Raith did that and more Tuesday night — and now she’s set her sight on another.

The Hornet senior joined an exclusive club in hitting 1,000 career points — a feat few high school basketball players can put on their resume.

Finishing with 20 on the night, she led her team to 52-25 on-the-road win over host Wisconsin Valley Lutheran and more importantly, the performance put her on track to break a 30-year record for the most points ever scored in Elcho girls basketball history.

Sitting at 1,003 with more than half the season yet to play, Raith sits only seven points shy of the record-high 1,009 posted in 1983 by Kathy Skidmore (Kennedy).

Consistenly among Elcho’s nightly top scorers, she will most likely surpass that mark when the Hornets play host to Goodman-Pembine on Thursday.

The Patriots will enter the game undefeated while Elcho sits at 4-1.

“We need to be prepare for a seasoned Goodman/Pembine team and execute our game the way the girls are capable of playing,” Elcho coach Michelle Kincaid said, adding that there is still work to do.

“Breaking the game down and reflecting on the shot chart, we are still missing too many high percentage shots (46 percent from the field overall) and our rebounding needs to improve tenfold,” she said. “We are not being physical enough on the rebounds and that is going to hurt us in closer games.”

The Hornets picked up 23 boards versus Wisconsin Valley Lutheran which graciously stopped play to mark Raith’s achievement.

“They play hard,” Kincaid said of her opponents, with special mention given to Kristin Danner who led the Wolves with 11 points. “She is a nice ball player who leads the team well both offensively and defensively.”

Up 20-5 early and 33-8 at the half, Elcho continued its run after the break with Raith hurdling 1,000 on a baseline drive to the basket in the third quarter. The Wolves outscored Elcho 11-6 in the fourth to result in the final score.

Shelby Ruhland joined her in double digits with 10 followed by Brenna DeNamur with seven. Kyleigh Decorah scored six. Shania Powell added four.

Suzy Scheppa finished with eight for the Wolves.
