Waupaca skaters fall to Robin boys 4-2 in GNC tilt|
The Antigo varsity boys hockey team traveled to Waupaca Tuesday in a Great Northern Conference game and won the contest 4-2.
With a slow start in the first period, the Robins trailed the Comets 1-0 by the end of the first.
“We overcame our first deficit well. We came back with intensity and determination to get back to even,” head coach Matt Borneman said.
In the second period, Antigo stepped up and scored three goals. To start off the scoring just 26 seconds into the period, Bailey Olson assisted by Joe Kubacki, managed to tie it up with Waupaca.
The rest of the Robins followed suit and Elijah Wickersheim was able to score at the 5:55 mark with assists by Jed Weix and Matt Wolter. The final goal of the period was scored by Alex Nagel with assists from Wickersheim and Olson, ending with a lead of 3-1.
“Bailey Olson got us even with a great shot through traffic, and he and his line mates played well throughout the night,” Borneman added.
Going into the third period with the lead, the Robins managed to score once more at the 5:15 mark with a goal from Olson with assists from Nagel and Weix.
Waupaca managed to shoot one more goal with 98 seconds left in the period, but it was not enough for Antigo’s four making the final score 4-2.
“We saw the ice well tonight and moved the puck to the openings. We did well creating time and space on the high pressure attack from Waupaca. We took a couple bad penalties at critical moments in the game, but our penalty killing units limited Waupaca's looks and controlled their man advantages,” Borneman said also. “Scramble play and unwarranted panicking allowed Waupaca to tally a second score in garbage time. It is something we can learn from and move forward.”
Antigo 5-0-1 (4-2 conference), will host Northland Pines on Thursday. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
