Hanke, Wald lead Lady Robins in 48-31 victory over Hodags
space
Steph Hanke made good on 13 of her 14 attempts at the free throw line to join teammate Brittney Wald at the top of the scorer’s list with 17 points each Tuesday as the Antigo girls basketball team beat its pesky Rhinelander visitors 48-31.

“It was a nice win, a good win for the kids,” Robin coach Dennis Duchac said.

With any win over the rival Hodags a “good one,” it was especially pleasing in light of Antigo’s questionable performance in last week’s loss to Northland Pines.

“I wasn’t sure how we would react but we responded pretty well after our disappointing play on Friday,” Duchac said.

Putting in a respectable effort on offense (15-for-37 from the field), the Robins limited Rhinelander to a total of eight field goals on the night with a majority of its points, 14, coming at the charity stripe.

“We held Rhinelander to 23 percent shooting on the night. That’s a real credit to our kids,” Duchac said.

Tied at 6-all at the end of the first quarter, the Robins took a 23-13 lead at the break on the strength of Wald who scored seven of them in the second quarter, including one of her two long shots of the night.

Her second came in the third quarter as Antigo extended its lead with a 12-9 run to head into the final stanza up 35-22.

Forced to foul, the Hodags sent the Robins to the line 16 times in the fourth quarter. Hanke shot 10 of them, making nine in the final eight minutes and 13 overall to send the Hodags packing for home.

“Brittney and Steph played really well,” Duchac said, adding that the team as a whole showed better patience than in past games and did a good job in handling Rhinelander’s man-to-man pressure.

“I was pretty happy with our shot selection and the girls did well adjusting to Rhinelander’s attempt to keep the ball out of Brittney’s hands by stepping up and filling in,” he added.

Tasha Voytovich finished with five points on the night for the Robins followed by Abi Warren with four. Chelsea Payant scored three and Nicole Payant, two.

Kylie Hunter led the Hodags with 10.

The game put both teams at 2-4 on the season.

With little rest, Antigo will travel to Oconto Falls on Thursday for a 7:15 p.m. start. Out of the Bay Conference, the Panthers sit at 3-0 overall.
