Northern Edge late game three goal surge falls short in OT|
The Antigo/Rhinelander/Three Lakes girls hockey team traveled to Appleton for a non-conference game Saturday. Despite a tough battle between the two teams, the Northern Edge girls fell short to Appleton United 4-3 in overtime.
In the first period, the Edge and Appleton skated to a 0-0 tie.
“The first period was a solid played period. We played well defensively and went into the second without either team scoring,” Antigo coach Corie Bottemiller said.
In the second period, Appleton United erupted for three goals while shutting out the Edge and making the score 3-0 after two periods. Appleton’s Juuli Spelman scored two goals while Emma Kohl had one goal and two assists.
“The second period we broke down defensively and gave up three goals. Luckily Shea had some key saves to keep us only down by three,” Bottemiller added.
Down by three, the Edge came back to tie it up with a great third period. The team did everything right in the third period, playing solid defense and playing aggressively in the offensive zone and it paid off.
Lindsey Steger started off the scoring with a great shot from the slot at the 2:39 mark. Then Lauren Smith scored with a perfectly placed shot on the power play at 8:16 with an assist by Lindsey Steger.
Two minutes and 28 seconds later, Katie Detert had the third goal when dumping the puck into the zone on net.
“We ended up losing the game in overtime but it was a hard fought game at the end. Shea had another solid game in net with 33 saves. She kept us in the game in the second period with 15 saves,” Bottemiller expressed.
The Northern Edge 6-4 (3-0 conference) will travel to Marshfield Tuesday. Game time is slated for 5 p.m.
