Clutch fourth quarter shots give Lady Hornets a 45-38 win|
It came down to the final minute for the Elcho girls basketball team Tuesday as the Hornets snagged a 45-38 thriller over visiting Laona-Wabeno.
Tied at 38-all at the 55 second mark, the game turned Elcho’s way when junior Shelby Ruhland connected on her fourth three-pointer of the night and senior Makayla Raith followed up with four straight successes at the free throw line to earn their team its second win of the young season.
The loss dropped the Rebels to 0-2 in the Northern Lakes Conference.
“It was a great win against a good Laona-Wabeno team,” coach Michelle Kincaid said. “I believe this game was a learning step for the girls in terms of what they are capable of doing as a team.”
A good win, yes, but it was a difficult one as well.
“We came out setting the tempo aggressively on defense and offense,” Kincaid said. “Our full court defense created turnovers which created transition baskets for us but unfortunately, we didn't finish on many of them. We need to capitalize on those high percentage shots not only to gain confidence on offense and increase the scoring deficit, but that also creates intensity on the defense side as well.”
As a team, the Hornets shot 40 percent from the field in the first half but struggled in the second, making only three of its 16 attempts to allow the Rebels to close a 29-22 gap at the break to six, 36-30, by the end of the third quarter and then nothing at all with time ticking down.
“Too many turnovers allowed the Rebels to get back in the game,” Kincaid said. “They are young and have a nice quick team.”
In the end, it was Elcho’s determination which pulled them through.
“I must commend everyone for a part in the win as they all gave 110 percent and left everything on the court,” Kincaid said. “On the defensive side, everyone played good defense but Bobbi Jo (Schauer), Kyleigh (Decorah), and Brenna (DeNamur) were playing high pressure defense, trapping people on the perimeter which created turnovers.
Rebounding was better this game,” she added, “but taking care of the ball and making good passes has to improve.”
Raith, Ruhland and Decorah all finished in double digits in the game — Raith leading the way with 17 including a perfect 7-for-7 at the charity stripe. Ruhland scored 15 with four three-pointers — three coming in the first quarter of play. Decorah finished with 11 points followed by Schauer with two.
Tressa Lange paced the Rebels with 11 followed by Austi Peterson with seven. Struggling with foul trouble, captain Ceanne Harrison sat a majority of the game, finishing with four points.
Elcho’s junior varsity team scored a big win, beating the Rebels 30-13. Samantha Johnson was high scorer with 11 points. Alexxis Groat scored seven. Brenna DeNamur, Kenzie Novak and Shania Powell all had four.
The Hornets will travel to White Lake on Friday.
