Charger boys have tough night against Pacelli at home|
The Pacelli boys basketball team placed a freeze on the Wittenberg-Birnamwood boys Tuesday as the Chargers were handed a nasty 69-29 loss at home.
“It was a disappointing way to start conference play,” Witt-Birn coach Lon Ebel said. “We did not execute very well on either end of the floor and did not take care of the basketball. Those are two things that we need to do every night and especially against an opponent like Pacelli.”
The Cardinals held a slim 17-10 lead after the first quarter, nothing too difficult for the Chargers to handle.
But battling three hot Pacelli players was too much for Wittenberg-Birnamwood as the Cardinals went off for 19 points in the second while putting a lid on the Chargers in allowing only nine for a 36-19 lead.
On the night, Isaac Elliott, Brett O’Sullivan and Jacob Feltz combined for two-thirds of the points by Pacelli hitting 17, 15 and 13 respectively.
Coming out with strong after the intermission, Pacelli added 16 to its total before going on to control the fourth and final stanza for the win.
Witt-Birn battled the entire time but could not find a shooting groove as it posted 10 points between the third and fourth quarters.
Making his presence known under the basket, Sam Szews led the Chargers with 13 rebounds
“Sam Szews was the bright spot and played with a high level of energy tonight,” Ebel added.
Brant Linke led the Witt-Birn squad with eight points with a pair of threes, Szews followed with seven. Nick Kapitz added six, Tyler Milanowski had four and Tyler Weller and Dylan Dadacki hit two apiece.
The Charger boys will be looking to grab a Central Wisconsin-8 win Thursday as it hosts Iola-Scandinavia in the 7:30 p.m. tip.
