Antigo boys post first GNC win, beat Tomahawk 58-46|
The Antigo Varsity boys basketball team started its Great Northern Conference season Friday with a hard fought battle against Tomahawk. Antigo came out on top with a score of 58-46 on parents night.
“It was a conference grinder of a basketball game. Tomahawk came out and played very hard and pressured us man-to-man,” coach Jesse Shaw said.
Jack Lund had a solid performance scoring 22 points.
“Jack did a very good job for us on both ends of the floor. Most of his scoring was in the paint which was nice to see. He also took advantage of Tomahawk down in the pivot,” Shaw added.
Antigo started fast in the first quarter with a 14-6 edge. Both teams went back-and-forth in the second quarter scoring 16 points apiece, making the score 30-26 in favor of Antigo at half-time.
Tomahawk outscored Antigo 16-12 in the third quarter while the Robins bounced back and outscored the Hatchets 16-14 in the fourth to secure the victory.
“We got a decent lead but could never break them. We played well at times but also had mental lapses during the game. We did just enough to handle the ball at the end and make them foul us,” Shaw also said.
Other players contributing to the victory were Cassius Noskowiak going 5-10 from the field for 16 points, Blake Below 4-4 for 10 points, Justin Hickman and Michael Bradley added four points. Luke Osborne and Cameron Noskowiak chipped in one.
Overall, the Robins shot 23 for 34 (67 percent) and 4-8 (50 percent) from the point arc.
Tomahawk was led by Jared Jarvensivu with 18 points on 2-4 three-point field goal shooting and 12-12 on the free throw line.
Antigo, 4-0 (1-0 in the GNC) travel to Crandon Monday for a non-conference game.
