Time to get snow, ice off walkways
space
City of Antigo residents and property owners have the weekend to get thier sidewalks cleared of the buildup from the past week’s ice and snow.

According to Sarah Repp, park, recreation and cemetery director, the city will begin inspecting sidewalks for hazardous conditions on Monday, and, if necessary crews will do the clean-up and send a bill.

“We will no longer be hanging door hangers as reminders that snow or ice needs to be removed from sidewalks for safe passage,” Repp warned, stressing that proper maintenance reduces slips, trips and falls. “Our primary goal is to keep winter walking routes passable and safe, with open sidewalks, crosswalks and the application of salt and sand when necessary.”

Even in the wintertime, sidewalks continue to receive heavy pedestrian traffic along with daily use by schoolchildren and postal carriers

“Keeping your sidewalks free of snow and ice allows for safe passage, and continued delivery of your mail,” Repp said, adding that the buildup must be deposited on your own property, not on adjacent lots or in city streets, which could result in removal charges.

“Any snow or ice precipitation must be removed within 48 hours to prevent treacherous walking conditions,” Repp said. “Open crosswalks allow for handicap passage.”

A salt and sand mix is available at the city street shop for all city residents for use on sidewalks. This mix is available at the 1020 Pierce Avenue location and is free of charge. It must be applied to icy areas with continued removal attempts made once the ice begins to melt.

“Take it slow when walking and treat every sidewalk as though it could have ice,” Repp said. “With the continued cooperation of our city residents this winter season will be safe for those commuting throughout our city on both sidewalks and streets.”

To report hazardous sidewalk conditions, contact Repp at 715 623-3633 extension 131.
