Earrings donated to museum have history dating to the Civil War
space
It was 1862, the nation was at war, and Mary Deleglise was worried.

Francis, her husband of just six years, was laying in a Union hospital, recuperating from wounds received at Antietam, the Civil War’s bloodiest conflicts.

To boost his spirits, and perhaps her own, Mary had a portrait taken of herself wearing a pair of earrings that had been a gift from Francis just months earlier, and sent it to him in the hospital.

He likely carried it throughout the remainder of his recuperation and his return to her in July, 1864.

With Mary by his side, Deleglise went on to a career as a surveyor and developer. He was the founder of the city of Antigo, and built the community’s first home, the Deleglise Cabin, which remains on the grounds of the Langlade County Historical Society Museum.

Now, 151 years after he gifted his wife with the earrings and she returned the favor with the portrait, their descendants have donated the jewelry to the museum as part of its collection of Deleglise memorabilia of papers.

Helen Morrissey, donated the earrings in memory of Mary Morrissey-Sweetser, daughter of Tom and Anna (Deleglise) Morrissey and granddaughter of Francis and Mary Deleglise.

Mrs. Morrissey has been a longtime museum volunteer and benefactor and her husband, the late Ed Morrissey, was a great-grandson of Antigo’s founding family.
