Charger boys fall to Hatchets in Tuesday's season opener|
The Wittenberg-Birnamwood boys basketball team began its 2013 season with a disappointing 63-23 loss to Tomahawk Tuesday.
“It was a tough way to start the season, but we need to keep our heads up and focus on getting better everyday,” Charger coach Lon Ebel said about the loss. “We did not give our best performance tonight and will look to correct our mistakes.”
The Hatchets were on fire right from the get-go as it rode a 16-6 first quarter lead all the way to the end. Tomahawk finished the night making 25-49 of shots attempted for 51 percent, while its visitor was 11-50 for 22 percent.
Witt-Birn had its strongest showing in the third quarter with 10 points as it was one point shy of doubling its first half efforts. Unfortunately Tomahawk never slowed as it put up 20 points in the third as well.
“On the bright side,” Ebel noted. “I thought our interior post players did an excellent job sealing and crashing the offensive boards. Sam Szews had some great hustle plays.
“When we executed our offense we got some really good looks, however nothing was falling for us. We need to finish around the rim and knock down some of our open looks,” he added.
Outside the paint Tomahawk’s Jared Jarvensivu was solid with his three point shot as nine of his game high 27 points came beyond the three point line. Teammate Fletcher Schoone followed with 13 points while Jordan Roessler added 11.
Sam Szews led the Chargers offense with 10 points. Tyler Milanowski had six, Dylan Dadacki five and Matty Donnelly two.
“I give credit to Tomahawk for coming ready to play and Jarvensivu played an excellent game,” Ebel added.
The Chargers make its first home appearance Thursday as they host Gillett in a 7:30 p.m. game.
