Michael Gelhausen is Librarian of the Year|
|Antigo native Michael Gelhausen has been named Librarian of the Year by the Wisconsin Library Association.|
Gelhausen, son of Frank and Berwyn Gelhausen of Antigo, will receive his award at the association’s annual conference slated Oct. 24 in Green Bay.
Gelhausen is director of the Jack Russell Memorial Library in Hartford.
“It’s nice when your colleagues and the library board thinks you’re doing a good job,” Gelhausen told the Hartford Times Press newspaper. “There’s nothing that goes with that but it’s an honor and I also think it’s an honor because the city and library board have let me be involved in so many things.”
Gelhausen has been employed by the Hartford library system for 30 years and spearheaded the sometimes controversial drive to construct a free-standing library in that community. He helped to raise over $2 million in 12 months to help fund the project.
“The library’s beautiful,” he said. “We’ve got tons of people coming in to use it. We call it ‘the community’s living room’.”
He was nominated for the award by former Hartford Library Board President Dorothy Algiers.
“He’s been active in the new library, of course, and he’s been active in state organizations,” Algiers said. “He always knows what’s going on...He continues to press for changes and things that will benefit the library.”
Gelhausen served as president of the Wisconsin Library Association in 2001 and has sat on several organization committees. He also led three automation installations and helped to coordinate the connection of about 40 southeastern Wisconsin libraries to better serve patrons.
Hartford Youth librarian Cary Perzan applauded the award.
“He’s very well-respected throughout southeastern Wisconsin and Madison,” she said. “He’s the go-to guy for anything library related.”
Gelhausen developed his library skills early, serving as one of the first male pages at the Antigo Public Library in the late 1960s, when Shirley Barta was director. He graduated from Antigo High School in 1971 and the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1976.
He is married with two children.
