Nueske's celebrating 80 years of meats|
|Nueske’s Applewood Smoked Meats, a family-owned and operated smokehouse famous for its bacon, hams, and other specialty meats, is celebrating its 80th anniversary in business with an open-to-the-public celebration taking place on Friday and Saturday in nearby Wittenberg.|
Founded in 1933 by “R.C.” Nueske, the company began when R.C.’s family was having a difficult time financially in the heart of the Great Depression. R.C.’s father, and his grandfather before him, passed down the family’s Old World recipes for curing and smoking meats in the traditional way.
The back of the family automobile was loaded with home-smoked hams and bacon and R.C. headed out across northern Wisconsin to try and sell his products. Even though times were hard, people still appreciated the taste and quality of Nueske’s applewood smoked meats and his small business thrived.
Today, Nueske’s Applewood Smoked Meats remains located right where it started in Wittenberg and has widespread distribution and a national mail order operation. Many people in the culinary world are familiar with the taste and quality of Nueske’s meats.
Bob Nueske, R.C.’s son and current president, reflected on the success of the company
“In 1933 at the age of 17, my father had a dream, something that many had lost during the Great Deprssion,” he said.
He explained that this dream has brought the family’s signature Old World flavor to all 50 states and beyond.
“I’m very proud that, today, so many people know about our bacon and specialty smoked meats. It’s something my father could never have comprehended. I even know people who consider themselves vegetarians who eat our bacon,” he said.
The public is invited to attend the company’s celebration of the 80th anniversary on Friday and Saturday at 1390 E. Grand Ave., which is east of the community on the old Highway 45 route.
The celebration will kick off on Friday evening with fireworks, food, and live music, with the bulk of the events taking place during the morning and afternoon on Saturday.
Saturday events include crafts, a vintage car and vehicle show, live music, food, helicopter and camel rides, and a ping pong ball drop with major prizes.
