Antigo Area Weekend Activities|
A weekend full of entertainment, dining and a big new combined festival awaits northwoods visitors and residents.
St. John Catholic Church has combined its International Food Fest and Fall Fest under one umbrella, and it comes to the Langlade County Fairgrounds on Sunday.
There will also be racing all weekend presented by Antigo Wheels Unlimited, plenty of music, an unusual business retirement auction and much more.
A look at events, taken from the Journal’s advertising columns, follows:
INTERNATIONAL FOOD/FALL FEST
St. John Catholic Church will host the International Food/Fall Festival from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. There is no admission charge for the day full of activities and unique dining opportunities.
The international breakfast tents will open at 8:30 a.m. followed by the opening of all booths and raffles at 9 a.m.
At 11 a.m. there will be a polka Mass with Smokey Express celebrated by Rev. Dave Schmidt.
The international food court will open at 11:30 a.m. with ethnic foods and drinks from Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, China, and Thailand along with the United States. Native American cuisine will also be featured.
There will be a live auction with Rev. Charles Hoffmann as auctioneer at 1 p.m. with the Green Bay Packer game on the big screen televisions at 3:30 p.m.
Drawings will begin at 5 p.m. for a freezer full of meat and a variety of hunting guns. At 5:30 p.m. there will be the big drawing for a 2013 GMC Terrain or $15,000 cash, plus 15 other cash prizes.
The day includes more as well, including live entertainment with Smokey Express, Lovin’ Country and the Heritage Academy of Irish Dancers.
Wausau’s annual Artrageous Weekend is slated Saturday and Sunday throughout that community.
Marathon Park will host Art in the Park in the historic exhibition building, while the Festival of Arts will fill the 400 block of downtown.
At the Woodson Art Museum, Birds in Art opens for its acclaimed fall run.
All events are free and a shuttle bus will run both days.
Apple season has arrived at Grandview Orchard.
Lodi, Duchess, Viking and Whitney Crab apples are ready now, with Melba, Oriole and Jersey Mac ripening fast.
The Edison Club will welcome comedian Spencer James on Saturday for an 8 p.m. show.
Headquarters II, 1005 Fifth Ave., will feature live music with Dguap, featuring Shannon Conrad and Levy Showtyme, on Saturday. Music starts at 9 p.m.
Blues Talk will be at The Groove Nightclub in North Star Mohican Casino at Bowler tonight and Saturday at 8 p.m.
Backwoods Karaoke will be leading the fun Saturday beginning at 8 p.m. at Bad Habit Bar in Neva.
Three shows share the weekend billing at the Palace Twin Theater.
Starting tonight is “This is the End,” rated R. It is being screened Friday and Saturday at 7 and 9 p.m.; Sunday through Thursday at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
“Planes,” rated PG, can be seen Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.; Sunday through Thursday at 5:30 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
“We’re the Millers,” rated R, is showing Friday and Saturday at 9 p.m.; Sunday through Thursday at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Wausau Community Theater presents “The King and I” at the Grand Theater tonight and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday at 2 p.m. For tickets and further information, call 715 359-3972.
Antigo Wheels Unlimited will present a weekend of racing Saturday and Sunday at the GFI Raceway, Highway 45 south of Antigo. Saturday will feature flat track events with practice at noon and racing at 1 p.m. On Sunday, TT racing will start at 10 a.m. with practice at 9 a.m. Admission is $7, free for ages six and under.
The Antigo Bike and Ski Club will hold its fall meeting and pizza party on Tuesday at Vickie and the Vets. It will begin at 6 p.m. Everyone interested in cross-country skiing or snowshoeing is invited.
Riverview Golf Course is offering a fall membership special. Buy a 2014 membership at the 2013 discounted rate and play the remainder of 2013 and all of 2014.
Antigo Gymnastics Club is holding registration for the fall session, which starts Monday. Classes are offered for ages three and up. For information, call Stacy Quick at 715 216-5730.
North Central Sales Auctions will conduct a sale Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Galarowicz Electric, 611 Fifth Ave. It’s a retirement liquidation auction after 40-plus years in business. The wide variety of items include a Ditch Witch, vehicles, trailers, electrical equipment and parts, tools and rare items.
There will be a three-family yard sale today and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 214 Second Ave.
A huge garage sale will take pace at 318 Freiburger Ave. today and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Baby clothes, collectibles, power tools, Christmas lights and much, much more will be sold.
The CAR thrift shop, located at 627 Superior St., is holding a 25 cent sale on all clothing and shoes unless otherwise marked. Store hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Tired of camping and grilling out? Come out to the Cocktail Cage Bar and Lounge/Tomany’s Supper Club off Groth Road in Polar for fish, steak and seafood dinner specials. Serving starts at 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
Disabled American Veterans and Auxiliary will be serving brats, burgers and hot dogs today and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Copps Food Center.
SS. Mary and Hyacinth will host a fall salad luncheon on Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church hall on Third Avenue. The menu will include baked potatoes with toppings, salads, casseroles, desserts, rolls, coffee or milk for $6 per person. Everyone is welcome.
The Langlade County Historical Society is open for viewing Tuesdays through Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The historic 440 steam engine may be visited anytime.
The Clara R. McKenna Aquatic Center will offer a new four-week arthritis fitness class Tuesdays and Fridays at 9 a.m. starting Tuesday. To register or for more information, call the center at 715 627-0497.
Antigo Visual Artists presents “Betsy Popp and the Carvers” in the AVA gallery now through Sept. 28. The exhibition may be viewed during regular Langlade County Historical Society Museum hours, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays. The exhibit showcases the work of Betsy Popp, Jim Hubatch, Leif “Bud” Hillsland and Gary Hartl. The opening reception is tonight, 5 to 7 p.m., at the museum.
Antigo Veterinary Clinic will host an informative talk on five ways to help your pet live a longer, healthier life on Wednesday, 6 to 7 p.m., at the clinic off Amron Avenue. Free brats and beverages will be served. Limited seating is available. Call 715 623-4116 by Monday.
