Monroe Crossing visits Monday
space
A must-see evening of music is slated Monday at City Park, with a return appearance by Monroe Crossing.

The bluegrass band has been a fixture at the summer music in the park series, with this year’s performance sponsored by the Antigo Daily Journal and Johnson Coil.

Langlade Youth Vocalists and Entertainers (LYVE) will provide the opening act at 5:15 p.m., performing some of the music and dances being done later in the week representing Langlade County at the State Fair According to director Sara Wurtinger, funds are still needed to help cover expenses for the trip to Milwaukee.

Monroe Crossing will take the stage at 6:30 p.m.

Since first appearing at Music in the Park, Monroe Crossing has performed in Carnegie Hall, received national awards and created enthusiastic fans wherever they perform. The Carnegie Hall performance of the "Bluegrass Mass” was written specifically for Monroe Crossing and will again be performed in the famed venue in 2014.

Based in Minnesota, Monroe Crossing plays an average of 125 shows a year at major venues and festivals, frequently for non-bluegrass audiences—and people often comment that they'd never really liked bluegrass music until they attended a Monroe Crossing concert!

Monroe Crossing is made up of five very distinct personalities with differing musical backgrounds and tastes, combining for a very unique ensemble sound. They are Derek Johnson, guitar, lead and harmony vocals; Lisa Fuglie, fiddle, mandolin, lead and harmony vocals; Matt Thompson, mandolin, fiddle, baritone vocals; Mark Anderson, bass and bass vocals; and David Robinson, banjo.

Their paths crossed through the music of Bill Monroe so they like to say they had a "Monroe Crossing."

Pie and Culvers frozen custard will be served by representatives from the Antigo Area Community Food Pantry, which is asking music fans to bring food items or donations to the park to help restock the pantry. The pantry provides food security for many families in Langlade County all year long.

The Optimist cheese curd wagon will also be on the grounds and people are encouraged to come early for picnicking as well.

In the event of rain, plans are to go to the Fairgrounds for the concert with pies and cheese curds.
