Paulson named new Hodag activities director
space
The Rhinelander school district recently brought on board a new face to its staff, but yet a very familiar one to Antigo as Brian Paulson was named the activities director.

Taking on the position is something Paulson refers to as a “dream job.”

“It was sad to leave Marion as I enjoyed my job there, but I am ready to advance in what I am doing,” he said. “Rhinelander is bigger student and sports wise, but I look forward to building upon the school’s solid programs. They have a long standing tradition with their sports, just like Antigo and I look forward to the rivalry between the two.

“Who knows, in the future I may start stealing their coaches,” he joked.

An Antigo High School graduate, Paulson went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from UW-Oshkosh. Returning to Antigo in 2009, he served as the varsity girls basketball coach for one season before taking a job in Marion.

Spending the previous two school terms as the athletic director in Marion, Paulson feels he is ready for the switch to Rhinelander.

“Having played sports in high school (basketball and tennis) along with taking the position (in Marion) as physical education teacher while coaching volleyball and basketball at the junior varsity level has given me a good grasp of different sports,” he said. “Yes Rhinelander is a lot larger, but it reminds me so much of Antigo and that is a good thing.”

Paulson credits growing up in Antigo as a place that provided him lessons in learning how a community works together. He also had the advantage to observe his father, Jeff Paulson as not only a teacher in the Antigo district but also a former girls varsity basketball coach — an opportunity to utilize more as mentoring rather than father and son.

Although currently residing in Antigo, he anticipates a move to Rhinelander soon with his wife and twin three-year-old daughters. The couple is expecting their third child in February.
