Box Cars top Mud Cats for Little League Minors title|
The 40 et 8 Box Cars took the tallest trophy Wednesday in the 2013 Antigo Little League Minors championship game by beating the Absolute Realtors Mud Cats 15-10.
In the first inning the Mud Cats came out strong with some good eyes from Dane Cornelius, Thomas Versal, and Conner Kolz received a free pass to get on base and later score. Alex Samolinski hit himself on ultimately scoring for the 4-0 lead.
The Box Cars tied the score at 4-all in its half of the inning also with their vision. Calvin Jansen got hit by a pitch, Justin Hockers walked, along with Payton Pool. Elliott Orgeman batted the three around, later stealing home to tie it up.
Box Cars pitcher Payton Pool struck out two in the second and had a grounder hit back to him by Roland Jenkins which denied the Mud Cats ability to scratch out a run.
The 40 et 8 squad took the lead in the bottom as four additional runs scored by the keen eyed Jansen, Hockers, Kayden Steckbauer and Taylor Schielke who all received walks. Orgeman continued his hitting with a single.
In the third, the Box Cars put Orgeman on the mound who got off to a quick start as he struck out Samolinski and Joe Bartletti before Versal grounded out.
The Cars continued to capitalized on its defensive work in the bottom half of the third by plating six runs. With more of the same 20/20 vision, Hockers and Payton Pool walked their way to first. Orgeman was hit by a pitch which loaded the bases for Steckbauer. Waiting for the perfect pitch, he smashed the ball for a triple to bring in the base runners. Also scoring were Connor Cornelius, Landon Nelson, and Schielke all off of four balls.
Orgeman stayed strong on the mound in forcing a ground out from Conner Kolz followed by a pair of strikeouts by Gabriel Zelazoski and Jacob Peterson.
The Box Cars had one hit out of Wes Ebel who came in to score in the bottom, giving the 40 et 8 a 14-4 lead at the end of the fourth.
In the 5th the Mud Cats made their move. Dane Cornelius, Casey Smith, and Samolinski started off the fifth inning surge for the Mud Cats. Alex Martinez walked on with all base runners scoring to cut the margin to 14-8.
A final rally by the Mud Cats brought in two runs but was not enough as the 40 et 8 Box Cars took the title.
In play off action Monday the Box Cars defeated the Thunder 9-5 to advance to the championship round.
Hitting put them there with scoring leaders being Hockers who went 4 for 4 with two triples, Payton Pool 3-3 and Elliott Orgeman 3-3.
The Mud Cats earned their trip to the big show after taking out top seeded Muck Dogs in a high scoring game of 15-13.
