Legion team splits games with Marathon
space
The Antigo American Legion baseball team split a road double header with Marathon Friday as several young members of the Typhoon stepped up to fill roles of missing players.

In Game 1 both teams were scoreless through three, as Antigo rode a strong pitching performance from Justen Wegter and relied on solid defense.

The Typhoon struck first in the top of the fourth, when Caleb Raddant hit a sacrifice fly to score Wegter. Arin Verhagen led off the top of the fifth with a single, and Jake Husnick was hit by a pitch. That set the stage for Wegter once again, and he came through with a two RBI single.

After holding Marathon down in the fifth, Wegter finally allowed a run in the bottom of the sixth. The Typhoon gained another run in the top of the seventh, when another RBI single from Wegter scored Jake Maly. Marathon scored its second run in the bottom half, but it was just not enough.

Wegter led the Typhoon at the plate with three hits. Maly, Erik Schielke, Caleb Raddant, Max Nowinsky, and Verhagen each added a single.

Wegter's performance on the mound was just as impressive. He pitched a complete seven innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two.

Antigo got another solid pitching performance in Game 2, this time from Junior Legion call-up Cameron Noskowiak. Noskowiak allowed two runs in the bottom of the first, but then held Marathon scoreless until they picked up another in the fourth.

The Typhoon’s bats did not wake up until the top of the fifth, when singles from Verhagen, Maly, and Noskowiak, and a double from Wegter brought in three runs.

Antigo took the lead in the top of the seventh on a Noskowiak RBI single, but Marathon put it together in the bottom half, and took the game on a walk-off single, 5-4.

Noskowiak led the Typhoon with three singles, and Arin Verhagen added a single and a double. Jake Maly contributed two singles, and Wegter's two RBI double got Antigo back into the game. Max Nowinsky, and Erik Schielke each added a single.

Noskowiak pitched six strong innings for the Typhoon, allowing two earned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out five. Arin Verhagen pitched 1/3 of an inning, allowing an earned run on three hits and two walks.
