Witt-Birn's Maverek Bushman qualifies for sectionals in golf|
Wittenberg-Birnamwood freshman Maverek Bushman earned a spot Tuesday as the Chargers’ lone representative at next week’s WIAA sectional tournament at the Thornberry Creek Country Club in Oneida.
Carding a 91 in regional competition at the Indianhead Golf Course in Mosinee, Bushman was one of four individual qualifiers to advance to the next level despite their teams falling short of the needed mark.
“It was truly exciting to see Maverek put together a solid back nine to earn himself a spot at sectionals next week,” coach Chris Bartletti said. “He has steadily improved all season and today was a testament to his hard work.”
Although having some struggle on the early holes to finish with a 50 on the front nine, Bushman cut several strokes off his pace to tally a 41 on the back.
Freshman Kyle Adamski finished second on Witt-Birn’s scorecard with a 99 (51-48) followed by junior Brant Linke at 100 (48-52). Senior Tyler Thomas shot a 102 (54-48) while junior Taylor Bushman came in at 108 (58-50).
“It was bittersweet to see Maverek advance and have Tyler Thomas end his stint on the team,” Bartletti said. “Tyler’s position will be a tough one to fill next year.
“I am proud of the way Brant continued to grind it out even when he wasn’t playing as well as he normally does which is why he has been the leader of our team all season,” he added. “Taylor also put in a better back and Kyle has improved quite a bit since the start of the season and hopefully will use his experience to continue making himself a better player.”
As a team, the Chargers shot a 392 to finish seventh in the 10-team field. Only the top four teams advance to the sectional level.
Green Bay Notre Dame was the regional champion at 309, beating out Marinette by a 32-stroke margin. Seymour was third at 359 followed by Bonduel in fourth at 369.
Oconto Falls was fifth at 370 followed by Freedom, 383; Witt-Birn, 392; Peshtigo, 406; Mosinee, 414; and Clintonville, 481.
“I am proud of this entire team as they continued to raise their game as the season went on and have been there to pick each other up,” Bartletti said. “This is a great group of players (both on and off the course) to coach and I know that the underclassmen will put in the time in the off-season to keep getting better.”
Sectional competition at Thornberry Creek will commence Tuesday at 9 a.m.
The first two teams and top three individuals who are not members of a qualifying team will advance to state meet at Madison’s University Ridge June 3-4.
