Robins' baseball team secures GNC top spot|
Despite the horrid outcome of Tuesday’s Red Robin versus Stevens Point baseball game at Kretz Brothers Park, Antigo earned the prestigious title of Great Northern Conference Champs.
Hosting the Wisconsin Valley champs, Antigo went down in five, 15-2.
“In the baseball world, that would be called a ‘beat-down’,” head coach Dan Bastle said. “But honestly, I thought we played well.”
And maybe some positives are what Antigo needs to focus on as it looks toward the playoffs.
“As a team, we’re mentally and physically, tired from all the games over the last three weeks,” Bastle explained. “I don’t look at the score after games but what went on during certain situations and tonight, there were some positives. “I thought Blake Below and Danny Will threw well providing confidence going into the play-offs.”
Even looking at how the game began, Bastle believe his team can “play with anyone”.
Antigo scored its first two, and only two runs of the night in the first two innings. Randy Krebs reached on a walk to begin the night. He advanced off the bat of Justen Wegter with Will loading the bases on a free pass of his own. A pair of errors during Caleb Raddant’s sacrifice plated Krebs for the Robins.
In the second inning, Brett Greening singled his way on. Krebs followed suit while Wegter’s hit brought the second tally in. From there Antigo struggled at the plate versus Panther pitcher Austin Schulfer with Wegter producing the final hit for the Robins. On the night, Wegter finished 3-for-3 with an RBI displaying why he was selected to the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association All-Star team.
“Tonight Justen showed why he was nominated to the All-Star team—he can flat out hit,” the coach added.
Wegter will represent Antigo on the All-Star West team June 28 and 29 at E.J. Schneider Field at Oshkosh North High School. He will be playing among the top 72 high school seniors in the state as West faces East on the 29th at 6:30 p.m.
Antigo utilized four pitchers with Below taking the mound first. Lasting 2 2/3 innings, Below took the loss in giving up eight hits for as many runs. Wegter stepped in as he gave up two hits for one run. Raddant and Will closed out the final inning of the night.
Stevens Point jumped all over the Robins in the third and fifth inning with solid batting, proving why they have the No. 5 ranking among division 1 teams.
“Point is an excellent team that shows no mercy when teams make fundamental mistakes,” Bastle concluded.
Antigo, now 15-3 overall, 5-1 in the GNC will take a few days breather before hosting Lake Geneva Saturday at 3 p.m. for its first of two games.
