Lady Robins gear up for weekend home tourney

Tuesday’s soccer match at Lakeland High School was a test of character for the Antigo girls varsity squad.

The teams appeared to be pretty evenly matched, skill-wise, as the first passes were made. Antigo soon found out, however, that Lakeland would be a very physical team.

“Our girls struggled a bit to move the ball up the field, as the frustration of their opponents’ playing style set in,” Robins coach Aimee Hein said.

Mikayla Nelson (junior), Lauren Smith (sophomore), Breanna Brennecke (junior), Keah Mach (junior), Alicia Lex (senior), MacKenzie Parise (junior), and Steph Hanke (junior) all managed to push through Lakeland’s defense to get some shots on goal. Unfortunately, Lakeland’s goalie was able to intercept all of Antigo’s attempts.

Lakeland’s aggressive playing kept Antigo’s defense on its toes. As expected, its defense did not waver.

Hanke and Felicia Fermanich (senior) both had a number of steals, intercepts, and saves; Caroline Roller (sophomore) came away with a number of steals and intercepts as well. Goalie, Mara Wurtinger (sophomore) came away with six saves of her own.

Antigo held Lakeland to one goal for most of the game, but after 62 minutes of facing a bigger and meaner Lakeland team, the Lady Robins started to run out of steam. Lakeland scored three more goals before the end of the game, bringing the final score to 4-0 with Lakeland on top.

“Despite the score, I couldn’t be more proud of the Antigo varsity girls. They could have very easily reacted to the unfavorable conditions in a negative way, but each and every girl got back up with grace and composure every time she was knocked down,” Hein said. “The girls should be very proud of the way they play soccer with class.”

The team has a day to heal before hosting a tournament at Listle Field on Saturday for Ashland, Wausau West, and Merrill. Games begin at 10:30 a.m. with Antigo taking on West on the main field while Merrill and Ashland square off on the junior varsity field.
