Elcho Hornets win Northern Lakes battle vs. Lakers|
It was a bitter sweet night on the ball diamond in White Lake Tuesday as the Lakers hosted the Elcho Hornets. Each team was looking for its first victory of the short season, in cross-county contest. In the end it was the Hornets who left the ball field with the 20-7 win.
“We hit the ball well last night and had solid pitching again,” Elcho coach Ryan Conradt said. “Errors were still there, but not nearly as many as we had before.”
White Lake stepped up first in the scoring column as Joe Kubacki and Kris Gallagher gave the Lakers a 2-0 lead after the first inning. An uneventful second inning gave way to Jaeger Adams two-run homer in the third, knotting the game at 2-all.
The Elcho hitters kept pounding the ball at White Lake as it plated five more runs in the fourth. Taking its advantage to 10-2 midway through the fifth, the Lakers dug deep in responding with a three-run shot by Dillion Gollihue.
Continuing its hitting streak, Elcho pounded out the final four of its 11 game hits in doubling its score leaving White Lake in a 20-5 hole.
With a never give up attitude, the Lakers closed out the night with a pair of runs.
“You really can’t win a ballgame with eight errors,” White Lake coach Matt Meronk said. “We did better on fielding the ball but then had issues on the throw.”
Both teams winding-down to the playoffs, Elcho hosts Marion Saturday in a double header earned the No. 4 seed and will host Phelps on May 24th. White Lake is done with its schedule and awaits a final decision for the playoffs.
“I think our confidence is up at the plate, but we still need to be more aggressive and swinging with runners on. I'm pleased with the progress that we're making as we near playoff time,” the Hornet coach added.
