Hornets face long week of baseball|
Tuesday marked the second time in as many days that the Elcho baseball squad posted a loss. Facing a slew of games this week, the Hornets did not have a solid start in hosting Laona/Wabeno Monday and Three Lakes Tuesday, falling 7-4 and 14-8 respectively.
We gave it away, referring to Tuesday’s loss—its frustrating beyond words for everyone on this team,” Hornet coach Ryan Conradt concluded.
Things started off relatively even for both teams as neither could plate a run in the first inning. But the second was an entirely different ball game.
The Bluejays broke open the scoring in the second and third by utilizing outfield errors and well placed hits for a 11-3 lead.
After a well-timed team meeting, the Elcho players settled into a groove and began playing small ball.
Limiting Three Lakes to a single run in the fourth, the Hornets increased its tally by two, then three in the sixth. Although trailing 12-8, the contest was not out of reach with an inning to go.
That was until Three Lakes bucked up its game as it notched its final two runs while cutting Elcho off at its knees.
Alec Smith, Jaeger Adams, Luke Brendemuehl and Trevor Novak each recorded a pair of hits for Elcho. Smith, Adams and Brendemuehl all had doubles.
“B.J. McKinney pitched an excellent game for us,” Conradt said.
McKinney spent the entire night on the mound, ultimately taking the loss.
In seven innings on the mound, McKinney gave up 12 hits, walked two and struck out six.
Elcho remains at home this week in hosting Phelps Thursday and Crandon Friday.
