Loons crash out of sky here
space
Today’s icy mix has sent migrating loons crashing to the ground, with potentially fatal consequences.

Marge Gibson and her crew at Antigo-based Raptor Education Group were responding throughout the morning hours to reports of loons that had been grounded by ice and unable to return to flight.

“We’re getting calls from all over,” she said. “I think it’s a big fallout.”

At the Langlade County Fairgrounds, county personnel were surprised to see a loon stranded in the parking lot next to the new cattle barn, making itself at home in a puddle but unable to take off.

Department of natural resources wildlife technician Eric Borchert rescued the stranded bird.

“It looked like it was in pretty good shape,” Borchert said, adding that he took the loon to Mueller’s Lake at Polar where there was plenty of open water to allow it to take off.

Gibson and Borchert both stressed that the birds are helpless on land and are easy prey for predators, but they are also very tough and rescuers must wear protective gear such as eyewear and gloves.

Gibson said that if a downed loon is spotted, the best advice is to keep a close eye on it and contact REGI at 715 623-4015 or 715 627-7408. If possible, Gibson suggested covering the bid with a blanket, placing it in a cardboard box and transporting it to the raptor center.

“That would really help us out,” she said.

Both wildlife specialists expected the reports to continue until the weather improves.

“I’m sure we’ll get more reports throughout the day,” Borchert said.
