Robins have troubling day at Crystal Springs

April 30, 2013

A lack of outdoor practice time is taking its toll on the Antigo golf team. Attending the Thunder Invite as Crystal Springs Golf Course Saturday in Seymour, the Robins finished 13 with a combined score of 377.

Bay Port took team honors at 330, Wrightstown second 332, Luxemburg-Casco third 334, Pulaski fourth 342, Marinette fifth 345, New London sixth 357.

Sturgeon Bay finished seventh 360, Kaukauna was eighth 363, Shawano ninth 365, Seymour 10th 366, West De Pere 11th 367, Ashwaubenon 12th 377, followed by Antigo, Oconto Falls 14th 399, and Tomahawk 15th with a 441.

“Being the first or second time out with no outside practice really makes it difficult,” head coach Steve Fermanich said. “But with some good practice time coming up, I expect some drastic improvement—especially if we are going to compete for our shortened conference schedule and trying to defend our conference championship.”

Individually Nick Bolen was the only Antigo player to reach the top 10. Finishing the par 72 course, Bolen shot a 78 to take sixth place.

David Spengler of Luxemburg-Casco earned meet medalists with a 75 3-over par. Brandon Kvoes, Wrightstown was second with a 76; Nick Hubbard, Bay Port, Levi Dax, Luxembourg-Casco and Austin Elsner, New London all tied for third with a 77.

Luke Welsing, seventh, from Bay Port followed behind Bolen with an 81; Owen Nowicki, Pulaski, 82 for eighth; and tied for ninth place with an 83 were Alex Schwartz, West De Pere, Bradley Thelen, Marinette, Grant Aubry, West De Pere, Andy Swanson, Marinette and Logan Nowinski, Pulaski.

“Nick playing in his first meet of the year, was playing excellent golf,” Fermanich noted. “He had one bad hole that probably kept him out of being the medalist. I look for great things from him as our season continues. The rest of us kind of struggled, I'm sure the effort will be there, but my seniors have to start showing up.”
