Kirsch'2 3-run homer not enough to lift Robins over Pulaski, lose 8-5|
The Red Robin baseball team suffered its first loss of the season with a trip to Pulaski Friday. The Red Raiders carried an early game lead over for the 8-5 victory.
A quiet first two innings gave way to Pulaski breaking the scoring open in the bottom of the third. Working on two outs, Antigo’s Erik Schielke was looking to get out of the inning after giving up a solo run in the second.
Pulaski’s number two man, Luke Reynolds lead with a single followed by Luke VanLanen. Reaching on a walk, Andy Thompson loaded the bases for the Raiders. After an RBI single by David Halla, Pulaski took advantage of well-placed balls to close out the inning up 4-0.
Antigo’s bats came to life in the fifth as it worked over Pulaski’s Taylor Splan.
“The guys showed a great deal of tenacity by battling back,” Antigo coach Dan Bastle said. “Overall, we played great.”
Randy Krebs started things off for the Robins with a double, Dan Will placed a single out in left field leaving runners on the corners. Coming in as the No. 4 hitter, Blake Kirsch worked the count to full, delivering a three run shot, his second home run in as many games, to make the score 4-3 Pulaski.
Retiring the Red Raiders in order, Antigo started back up in the sixth.
Brett Greening reached on an error and advanced to third off a Jake Maly single. Justen Wegter singled to left allowing Greening to go home.
After Krebs hit into a fielders choice, Will doubled bringing home Maly. The move gave the Robins its first lead of the contest, 5-4.
In the seventh, Antigo threatened but couldn’t plate a run but that would not be the case for Pulaski.
After striking out the first batter, VanLanen reached on an error. Thompson singled to left putting runners at the corners for the Raiders. Halla hit a ground ball off of Schielke’s leg, allowing the tying run to score. With runners on first and second, Hunter Micolichek homered to center sealing the game for Pulaski.
Bastle praised Schielke after having what he deemed an “awesome” day on the mound.
“Will had an exceptional game all around; 4-for-4 with two doubles. Greening played well and Kirsch came up big again with another home run,” the coach said. “Now we’ll put this one behind us and get ready for the double-header on Tuesday at home against Northland Pines.”
