Red Robin net men score first home win of season

April 24, 2013

What a difference a week made for the Antigo boys tennis team. Playing in almost the same miserable conditions as it did last week at Ashwaubenon, a week of outdoor practice changed the results dramatically for the Robins as it defeated conference rival, Lakeland, 6-1.

Although the weather conditions were less than spring like with spectators sporting blankets while athletes donned gloves and winter hats, the team played with what coach Dave Zalewski described as “poise and confidence.”

“Our goal this season is to win the conference and in this abbreviated season, beating Lakeland started us on the path to achieving this goal,” Zalewski said. “Some of the courts still had snow and water on the ends but the boy's did well in implementing our team strategy of ‘make 'em play’.”

Antigo will have a strong look with its doubles pairings this season especially with the return of its No. 1 team of Colin Bastle and Kyle West, and No. 2 Joe Novak and Brian Bartletti.

Novak and Bartletti did an especially good job of holding the first set versus T-Birds Nick Garcia and Levi Herrick. Jumping out to a 3 -0 lead, the Antigo duo fell behind 4-5 before fighting back to win the first set in a tie breaker.

Ben Kryka at No. 3 singles had the most challenging win of all the Robin players. After easily defeating Zach Carlson the first set, he lost momentum and got thrashed in the second. Both players settled in with Kryka coming out on top in a close third set.

At No. 3 doubles, Isaac Cuellar and Jake Powell played their first varsity match together and did a good job of playing aggressive net to win their match. Alex Thomae did a nice job getting his first victory at varsity singles and Brett Haakenson, playing at No. 2 singles played his usual solid tennis.

The only loss for the Robins came at No. 1 singles where Wes Fick's opponent was a human backboard causing Fick to come up a little short.

With the temperatures slated to warm up as the week progresses, Antigo should be able to remain at home this week to host Rhinelander on Thursday.
