April 24, 2013

Dr. Noel Deep, MD, FACP, an internal medicine specialist with the Aspirus General Clinic and Langlade Hospital, recently received certification in hospice and palliative medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine.

According to the board, certification in hospice and palliative medicine is designed to recognize the qualifications of physicians who are specialists in the care of the seriously ill and dying patients with life-limiting illnesses.

This certification encompasses the expanding scientific knowledge and skills required for symptom management when cure is not possible and appropriate cares rendered during the last months of life.

A certificate in hospice and palliative medicine acknowledges physicians who specialize in taking care of patients facing life-limiting illness. The board's certification requirements include completion of formal training in a fellowship program or designated practice experience and the passing of the hospice and palliative medicine certification examination.

Although participation in the board certification process is voluntary, it is widely recognized by government, health care systems, insurers, and patients as an essential tool to judge that a physician has the knowledge, experience and skills for providing quality health care within a given specialty or subspecialty. It is considered the gold standard because of its unique physician-directed approach for assessing qualifications.

"It is a fact that we will all eventually die and I believe that our role as physicians and other health care providers in medicine should also include our ability to help our patients complete this final phase of our lives with all possible comfort, dignity and peace, and support their families and loved ones through this transition," Deep, who is also board certified in internal medicine, said.

Palliative care is for patients facing serious illness, while hospice generally serves those who are terminally ill.
