Antigo golfers begin season at Whistling Straits
space
April 23, 2013

Spring 2013 hasn’t been great for playing golf, quite impossible in fact with area greens caked with snow and water, but Antigo High School greensmen got their clubs swinging Monday in its season opener at one of the state’s best courses — Whistling Straits at Kohler.

Taking on the challenges of the Irish Course, Coach Steve Fermanich’s crew took on Sheboygan Lutheran and lost on a 13-stroke margin 427-413.

“This is a truly exciting and extremely difficult course and when you add in cool temps and high winds and the fact that we have not swung a club outside yet, well you can guess that our scores were very high,” the head man said.

The only Antigo golfer to break 100, Tony LeBrun earned the meet medal by finishing with a 94 (49-45) on the day.

“It was impossible to avoid the thousands of sand traps which of course we had no practice at, so that was one of the major problems,” Fermanich said. “Tony really held his game together and I am very proud of his performance.

“Although awed by the course, most of the others let it get the best of them,” he added. “But the kids really enjoyed playing one of the nation’s top courses, so it was a great experience for all of them.

Antigo’s Justin Kennedy shot at 104 (49-55), Nick Arrowood chalked a 107 (52-55), Connor Langseth posted a 109 (56-53) and Matt Incha came in at 117 (59-58).

The Robins are scheduled to travel to Crystal Springs golf course in Seymour on Saturday.
