Lady Robins compete at Wausau West

April 17, 2013

A lack of depth, not talent, haunted the Antigo High School girls track and field team Tuesday as the Lady Robins finished last in a field of four at Wausau West.

Antigo’s roster numbered only 10 athletes making it difficult to score multiple points across the board, finishing with only 16.5 to finish fourth overall. The host Warriors dominated the combination outdoor-indoor meet with 146.5 points. Merrill was second at 56.5 followed by Wausau East in third at 34.5.

“Our girls did the best they could, competing through injuries and illness,” coach Kristy Bovre said. “With such a small team, our girls are starting to feel the pressure of being stretched so thin across so many different events. Luckily, we’re off now until April 26th, and that will give our girls a chance to rest and recuperate.

“I’m very happy to be working with a group of girls that are willing to take on four events in the hopes of earning some points for our team,” she added. “I was very impressed with Mandy Petts’ and Sam Reichl’s performances in the 200m dash, placing fourth and fifth, respectively. Both girls are freshmen who are showing true promise.”

Petts ran the race in 32.37, beating out Reichl (32.96) by less than a second. Wausau West’s Jasmin Samz won in 30.01. Antigo’s Ellie Payant took eighth in the race at 34.47.

Petts also grabbed bronze in the four lap relay, joining fellow runners Sarah Duff, Emily Marciniak and Chelsie Marshall in clocking a time of 1:26.59. West won by crossing the line in 1:25.08.

Marciniak also competed in three other events, taking fourth on both triple jump (31’ 5 1/2’) and 55 meter hurdles (9.86); and fifth in 200 meter hurdles (35.45).

Katie Hoeppner competed in three events, placing third in long jump (14’ 4’’); fourth on shot put (28’ 7’’); and eighth in 200 meter hurdles (36.13).

Emily McGhee placed sixth in 55 meter hurdles (10.05) while Sami Smits placed seventh in both the pole vault (6’ 6’’) and 55 meter dash (8.46).

Kari Kleinschmidt competed in two events with her best finish coming on pole vault where she took fifth with a seven foot leap.
