Elcho girls open the new year with a 56-39 victory over Goodman team
space
Elcho High School senior Stephanie Flood scored a season high 24 points while teammate Lindsey Mueller finished with 10 as the Hornet girls basketball team opened 2006 Thursday with a 56-39 on the-road victory over Goodman.

The win edged Elcho to 4-2 in the Northern Lakes Conference while the Falcons dropped to 2-4.

“It was good to be back in conference competition after the break,” coach Michelle Kincaid said. “We had some highs and lows in the first half but we just worked through them.”

“I was pleased with the overall effort,” she added. “They always give it their all and I thank them for that.”

With starting senior Hope Kincaid out of play due to a shoulder injury, Elcho’s line-up included an array of combinations including the talents of sophomores Braedy Brigham, Courtney Palubicki and Kaylee Bovet who alongside their upperclassmen teammates, outscored Goodman in all four quarters.

Taking a 26-20 lead at the half, the Hornets extended that advantage to 39-30 after the third before out-shooting the Falcons 17-9 in the fourth for the win.

“I must compliment the older girls on their leadership on the floor,” the coach said. “It took us until the second half to get a good flow to the game and rebounding the first half was not what it needed to be. We gave them too many chances at the bucket and they kept it close.

“We broke out in the second half with some hot shooting from Stephanie,” Kincaid added. “She played an awesome game, when Steph is on, it really carries over and they all play more intensely.”

Brigham finished the game with eight points for the Hornets while Cara Schuster added four. Amanda Blaisdell chipped in three while Palubicki, Anna Johnson and Lauren Flannery all chipped in two. Katelyn Schramke added one.

“Lauren and Anna were strong in the inside,” Kincaid said. “Lauren got into some foul trouble early and Anna did a nice job stepping up.

“Cara did a nice job creating Goodman turnovers and pushing the ball up on the fast break,” she added. “Amanda played well getting good rebounds and helping make good decisions at the end of the game.”

As a team, the Hornets shot 38 percent (18-for-45) from the field and were 68 percent (17-for-25) on free throws including 11-for-14 in the fourth quarter.

Flood was the top rebounder, collecting seven of the team’s 23 boards.

Joanna Borzecki paced the Falcons with 13 points followed by Whitney Frydrych with nine. Ashley Millan scored eight, Nicole Laurent added five, and Iwona Czarniak had four.

There was no junior varsity game.

The Hornets will return to action Monday at Wabeno.
