Antigo gymnasts come together to win big over Rhinelander Dec. 30, 2009 Teamwork was put into action at Rhinelander Tuesday as Antigo’s gymnasts came together to post a decisive victory over the host Hodags.
Dominating the point field through all four rotations, the Robins won 131.7 to 111.125.
“We had a few days off with the holidays and didn’t feel as prepared as we could have been. However on a positive note, we are starting to gel as a team,” coach Julie Langseth said. “The girls are really starting to work together and support one another.”
Senior Miranda Ojala took the all around title and was in good company as teammates Sammy Stimac and Caitlyn Fleischman wrapped up the number two and three positions.
Stimac was an individual winner in two of the events — vault where she received an 8.7 and beam with an 8.725.
Ojala took the title on floor exercise, 9.1, while Fleischman scored a solid 8.3 on the uneven parallel bars to take first place.
Antigo’s largest number of points came on vault where the Hodags lost 33.9 to 28.85.
Behind first place Stimac, Ojala took second (8.5), Fleischman and Rylee Bricko tied for third (8.35) and Kirstin Tincher took fifth (7.8).
On floor exercise, Antigo dominated the field to win 33.5-30.05.
With the night’s top mark, Ojala took first followed by Stimac in second (8.55), Bricko in fourth (8.025), Fleischman in fifth (7.825) and Caysha Fleischman in seventh (7.6).
Antigo also got the edge on both beam (32.95-27.7) and uneven parallel bars (31.35-24.525).
“In the past few years, Antigo’s vault and floor have been our strengths and it is encouraging to see our beam coming along,” Langseth said, adding that the squad is also continuing “to work at the unevens as we are striving for more difficult skills.”
Behind Stimac’s 8.725 on beam, Ojala and Caitlyn Fleischman tied for second at 8.5. Bricko was sixth (7.225) and Dani Krimmer placed seventh (6.875).
On unevens, Ojala was second to Fleischman with an 8.05. Stimac and Tincher tied for fourth (7.5), and Caysha Fleischman was fifth at 7.225.
In the all around, Ojala totaled her scores to earn a 34.15. Stimac placed second at 33.475 followed by Caitlyn Fleischman at 32.975. Rhinelander’s Elle Spiegelhoff (32.075) and Megan Thornton (28.925) rounded out the top five.
