Oconto spoils Antigo grapplers parents' night

Dec. 11, 2009

Having an aggressive evening on the mats, the Antigo wrestling team wasn’t able to capitalize on its efforts, falling to Oconto 45-30 Thursday in the Sheldon Fieldhouse.

Holding his first parents’ night, Robins coach Dallas Moe felt the overall performance of the team was competitive.

“I can see continued improvement with the boys,” Moe said.

Antigo started off with a forfeit in the 125 weight class by moving Brandon Kriegel up to 130 for a better match up.

Unfortunately Kriegel got caught on his back early. He fought for most of the period but eventually was pinned.

Next up Tyler Braasch at 135, wrestled Oconto’s Trevor Fischer ended with Braasch being pinned at 1:40.

At 140, Jake Tatro got things going for Antigo with an impressive take down right into a sub-minute pin.

Sam Kamps took a 10-4 loss in the 145 class. Kamps stayed off his back and kept the score close enough to not give up a major decision for the Robins.

Luke Draeger endured a back and forth match at 152 pounds ultimately losing with a 11-7 decision.

At 160 pounds, Erik Hendrickson picked the pace back up for Antigo with a flurry of action in the first period, securing the pin in 1:38.

Kyle Andraschko took Hendrickson’s lead with another Robin pin in 1:03.

At 189 pounds, Keegan Edwards wrestled up and lost a decision 9-4. This again was very big for the team. Edwards wrestled up a weight class giving up almost 20 pounds to the best wrestler on Oconto's team.

“This was another situation where taking a close loss was a win for the team,” Moe said. “I am very proud of the guts that it took for Sam and Keegan to wrestle the way that they did.”

At 215 Kole Packard received a forfeit.

Fatih Velijoski wrestling at 285 pounds and had a very exciting match that unfortunately went south very quickly. Half-way through the second period Velijoski was ahead and got caught in a move on his back ending with him being pinned.

At 103 Matt Godsey received a forfeit.

Brad McGhee wrestled a tough 112 pound battle into the second period and eventually could not fight off of his back long enough and got pinned.

Antigo forfeited the final 119 pound match.

“We have a lot to work on, but it is very early in the year,” Moe said. “We are heading to D.C. Everest Saturday for a junior varsity tournament to hopefully get some of our younger and inexperienced guys more mat time.”

Antigo’s next varsity match will be Thursday at Mosinee.
