Robins handily defeat Mosinee 72-33 in home opener, Everest next Dec. 5, 2009 Unselfish was the first thing that came to mind of Antigo boys basketball coach Jesse Shaw Friday in describing how his team played in its home opening 72-33 win over Mosinee.
“They passed well and found the open man,” Shaw said. “The defense played by the team tonight was very good.”
“It feels great to have our first Great Northern Conference game in, and making it a win is even better,” he added.
Taking a commanding 18 - 4 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Robins expanded its lead by 34 by half-time to head into the intermission with the 41-7 advantage.
Jordan Mach led the team with 25 points, draining 6-9 three point shots. Skylar Cameron added 13 points, shooting 6-7 from the charity stripe. Connor Lund had 10, shooting 100 percent from the free throw line and 3-6 inside the arch.
“Connor is our zone buster,” Shaw said. “His job is to come in against the zone defense and shoot. He did a great job in getting open and performing as expected.”
Keeping its momentum going, the Robins continued to control the pace of the game by putting its foot down early and not letting up throughout the entire contest.
“The extensive lead allowed the subs to come off the bench,” Shaw said. “That group did a great job.”
Tyler Schwarz put up eight points for Antigo in the fourth quarter.
“Tyler did an excellent job of setting his feet and knocking down the shot for us,” Shaw said.
“Ivan (Flannery) came in and did a great job of passing the ball,” he continued. “He played so unselfishly.”
“I keep telling the guys that our game centers around defense,” Shaw said. “Tonight they performed so well that we forced Mosinee into 25 turnovers.”
Mosinee managed to pull within 35 points in the fourth quarter, cutting the gap to as close as 64-29, but Antigo never relinquished the lead on its way to the victory.
Putting its first of three consecutive homes games behind them, the Robins look ahead to hosting Wisconsin Valley Conference powerhouse D.C. Everest Tuesday.
“This will be a big game for us,” Shaw noted. “Everest hasn’t lost a game to us since 2004. We will have to play a solid game in order to win.”
Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
