A Sample of Peeps at our Past for today

Nov. 24, 2009

75 YEARS AGO TODAY

November 24, 1934

The director of the federal relief programs for Wisconsin said today that counties may have to start picking up some of the costs for the projects since there is a growing need for funds in Washington, D.C. He has asked the Roosevelt administration for an additional $1 million, and if it is refused, the costs will be shifted to local governments.

That would not be popular here, since several bridge projects are already underway and a preliminary budget that went into the hands of the county board today shows there are plenty of fiscal problems right here in town. Supervisors also complained that some of the men receiving public relief have refused to cut wood for the county purposes. The morning session came to an end when the problems with the relief programs created such a commotion that a recess was called until 2 p.m.

Ray Benishek is at his home in Neva where he is recovering from a gunshot wound to his foot. He was shooting at targets with Matt Novak when the accident occurred Sunday.

50 YEARS AGO TODAY

Chicago is shaken today after a TWA cargo plane experienced problems after taking off and crashing into a number of homes killing three fliers aboard the craft and at least six people in the homes. Midway Airport is a very busy spot with planes coming and going at all hours of the day and night, so residents on the flight path said the noise is not unusual — but this one sounded different just before it hit and burst into flames.

Judge Thomas McDougal has fined a Chicago man $50 and costs and suspended his hunting license for three years following an accidental shooting of a friend, also from Illinois. The man who was shot is in the hospital and since the gunshot, has had an arm amputated. The men were pushing a stuck jeep out of the mud when the mishap occurred.

A Civil Air Patrol plane flew drugs used in the treatment of a young hunter from northern Illinois to the Antigo hospital today in a bid to save the boy’s life. He was shot in the head accidentally while hunting in northern Oconto County as the season started last weekend.

Eight members of the Antigo High School football team have been named to the All-Valley Conference team. They area Jack Schleinz, Gary Piller, Bill Ruf, Jerry Rabe, Jim Bullis, Dick Mundl, Ed Duncan and Dave Bonnell.

25 YEARS AGO TODAY

November 24, 1984

(The date is not quite exact.)

Parke Oviatt, former manager of the busy Gambles Store on Fifth Avenue in Antigo, has died at the age of 73. He had been a resident of Antigo for 37 years and headed the store at Fifth Avenue and Edison Street for 26 years.

There is a sure sign that the Yule season is near. A picture on the front page shows three of the Antigo Daily Journal’s employees eyeing their work on the big holiday Christmas section coming out this week. The ladies on the picture include Cindy Habert, Kay Schroeder and Susan Blahnik.

The city of Antigo’s leaders cut $119,000 from the budget at a meeting last night but big tax increases still loom. The aldermen have already made big cuts in big-ticket items and that has not seemed to help.

The Antigo Northside Business Association will be holding a “Dickens of a Drawing” to promote its holiday programs for the coming weeks for local shoppers. Everybody is joining in the fun, from Hafemeister Implement to Kentucky Fried Chicken.

10 YEARS AGO TODAY

November 24, 1999

A picture on the front page taken at St. John Catholic Church shows that altar and a stunning display that will welcome people wishing to offer thanks on Wednesday evening at a special holiday service. Among those shown on the picture are Deacon Thomas Hartman, Rev. Charles Hoffmann, Rev. Kate Kraft and Rev. Ann Wahlers. The service will be held Wednesday evening and all are welcome to the program that will involve 11 area congregations.

A local resident was seriously injured when his slacks were ignited when he was burning a barrel of trash at his Deleglise Street home. He was brought to the local hospital and transported to a specialized burn center.

With the knowledge that there will be plenty of young people home for the Thanksgiving holiday, a number of clubs are offering entertainment. Karaoke Rose will be at the Edison Club Thursday, and Jill will be putting on the same sort of show at Vee’s Star Campground, south of Mattoon.
