SWAMP CREEK BRIDGE--Work is continuing on a pedestrian bridge over Swamp Creek at Mole Lake, part of the community’s multi-use trail funded through federal stimulus dollars. Mole Lake trail work continuing Nov. 16, 2009 Work is continuing on a new multi-use trail through Mole Lake that will be used by everyone from bikers and pedestrians to joggers and snowmobilers.
The Sokoagon Chippewa Tribe received a $738,000 grant from the state Department of Transportation to fund the work, which stretches from boundary to boundary on the southern Forest County tribal reservation.
According to Pete McGeshick, Mole Lake tribal member and project overseer, the paved trail system will serve pedestrians, bicycle riders, joggers, as well as those who are wheel-chair bound and will be available for convenient access to various Mole Lake facilities by snowmobiles when there is snow on the ground. The trail is not open to all-terrain vehicles.
“This is truly an exciting project which will help our community members and the visitors who come here as well, to be able to be more mobile without the use of a motor vehicle and it will create a healthier and safer environment for all residents, especially those with disabilities,” McGeshick said.
The trail includes a separate clear-span prefabricated steel bridge over Swamp Creek on the west side of Highway 55 to provide a safe crossing for pedestrians.
The path also connects the residential developments that exist north and south of the bridge, including the tribal government offices, the Boys and Girls Club recreation center, Elders Center, historic log cabin visitor’s area, Indian Health Service, historical markers as well as the gaming facility, hotel-lodge and conference center.
The trail will be paved early next year.
Wisconsin was allocated $529.1 million in federal stimulus dollars for a variety of transportation projects.
