Bulldogs battle tough Merrill boys basketball squad Nov. 13, 2009 The Merrill eighth grade boys basketball teams proved to be a tough opponent as both Antigo Middle School teams produced a loss to the visitor.
A team
Antigo coach Steve Fermanich’s A squad put up good numbers against Merrill, but ultimately fell 38-20 on Thursday.
The Bulldogs scoring was led by Ashton Barske with six points. Brett Haakenson added three for Antigo, while teammates Colin Bastle, Cody Kakes, Lane Smith, Ryan Fassbender and Blake Kirsch each had two.
Defensively for the Bulldogs Fassbender grabbed eight rebounds with Kirsch nabbing six. Haakenson tallied three assists.
B team
Faced with an almost identical score, the middle school B team closed out the night with a 36-20 loss.
Citing excessive turnovers and giving up the ball on offensive rebounds, Bulldog coach Chadd Nelson credits Merrill’s win coming off of fastbreak layups and second chance baskets.
Antigo’s scoring was led by Tyler Jaracewski and Dylan Packard each adding four points. A.J. Whited contributed three, Brandon Bastle, Jake Powell, Tyler Pugh and Jered Pavek recorded two apiece.
“Cortland Tatro did a really nice job for us defensively tonight,” Nelson said. “He did a good job moving his feet and really made Merrill's guards work.”
Packard pulled down four rebounds for the Bulldogs.
The Middle School eighth grade teams will host Mosinee Tuesday, with the first game slated for 4 p.m.
