Bulldogs split with Rhinelander in boys hoops opener Nov. 12, 2009 The Antigo Middle School boys eighth grade basketball team kicked off the 2009-10 season Tuesday at home.
Hosting Rhinelander, the Bulldogs saw a 38-22 win from the “B” squad while the “A” team was handed its first loss, 33-14 for the year.
A team
Facing a big, strong and talented opponent in Rhinelander, the Bulldogs were led in scoring by Lane Smith with four points.
Ryan Fassbender contributed three, while teammates Cody Kakes, Brett Haakenson and Blake Kirsch each added two a piece.
On the defensive end, Ryan Fassbender grabbed seven rebounds for Antigo and Justin Hickman had four.
B team
Creating numerous turnovers for the Bulldogs, Tyler Pugh and A.J. Whited allowed the offense its much needed scoring opportunities.
Ashton Barske led the scoring attack with 20 points followed by Dylan Packard and Devin Gress, each adding four a piece. Gress was also credited with three assists.
Gress and Barske displayed smart ball handling for the Bulldogs by creating opportunities for not only themselves to score, but by opening up scoring opportunities for other players with good passing.
Wyatt Franzen led the defense with five rebounds.
