Red Robin wrestlers will kick off season with Sunday's 'Meat and Greet' Nov. 12, 2009 The Antigo High School wrestling team is preparing for its 2009-10 season by revitalizing an old tradition.
Robin coach Dallas Moe is inviting the Antigo wrestling community to the high school commons for a potluck meal and social gathering at 6 p.m Sunday.
This event is open to wrestlers at all levels and their families, fans and especially, alumni wrestlers. As it is his first year in Antigo, Moe is hoping for a good turn-out for the gathering.
“This is an excellent opportunity for the wrestling family to come together and have fun,” Moe explained.
The preseason potluck has been a yearly occurrence for the high school team prior to its first practice and this year Moe decided to open the event up to the entire wrestling community.
“It is important that we get to know each other,” he added. “It’s a great way for the guys to learn that they are a part of something important.”
Following the meal, hence the “meat” portion of the program, there will be a short presentation introducing the coaching staff from the high school, middle school, and youth levels. There will also be an introduction of the Antigo Wrestling Club and its board members.
The high school wrestling team’s first practice will be Monday the day after the potluck. The team will have less than three weeks to prepare before they face their first competition, at home, when they host the John Robert’s Duals tournament on Saturday, Dec. 5. Named after a former Antigo wrestling coach, the tournament will begin at 9:45 a.m. At the event, Antigo will square off against Rhinelander, Athens, Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Lakeland, and Waupaca.
The middle school will have its first practice on Nov. 30 with its first dual competition on Dec. 15 at home against Merrill and Rhinelander. The event is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m..
The Youth Wrestling Program will have its first meeting Dec. 1 in the high school commons. First practice for any area youth pre-kindergarten through fifth grade will be on Dec. 3 in the high school wrestling room.
Anyone interested in attending should bring a dish to pass. Sandwiches and beverages will be provided courtesy of the club. The event should conclude shortly after 7:30 p.m.
