Veterans Day will be marked here Wednesday 90 years after armistice Nov. 10, 2009 Schoolchildren will join with members of the community and veterans of all ages to pay homage on the 11th day of the 11th month on Wednesday.
Veterans Day programs are scheduled throughout the area on Wednesday, 90 years after the armistice was signed ending what was then known as the “War to End Wars.”
ANTIGO
Antigo’s commemorations will be centered at the Middle School and Veterans of Foreign wars Clubhouse on Elm Street.
The Middle School tribute will begin at 10 a.m. with guest speakers Steve Bradley and Stanley Koss. There will also be student speakers and music by the school’s band and choirs.
The program will end with a gun salute by area veterans.
Following that program, veterans will reassemble at the VFW Clubhouse for an 11 a.m. flag-raising and rifle volley. Lunch will follow.
Veterans will also assemble at 10 a.m. for a flag-raising at Eastview Medical and Rehabilitation Center.
ELCHO
The Elcho Veterans Day program will begin at 10 a.m. in the school gymnasium, hosted collectively by Noetzelman-Boodry American Legion Post No. 377 and Auxiliary and the school.
Master of ceremonies will be Legion Commander Larry Anderson, who will also offer the message of the day. Rev. Jack LaMar of Elcho United Church of Christ will give the invocation and benediction with welcoming remarks by Elcho District Administrator Bill Fisher and Auxiliary Vice-President Marie Schuh.
Legion Membership Chair Richard Schuh and Adjutant Barry Thiel will present the proper way to fold the American flag and there will be reports from Badger Boys Tony Bruno and Adam Guth and Badger Girl Brettlee Brigham.
Gold Star Mothers will be introduced and a final roll call announced for Legion members who died over the course of the last year.
There will also be a gun salute and “Taps” performed by Bridgette Brekke.
Music throughout the program will be provided by the school’s band and choir led by Mary Brendemuehl.
Afterwards, veterans, auxiliary members and guests are invited to join students for lunch.
WHITE LAKE
The White Lake School will host a mix of speakers and music, plus a special presentation by a man who helped design some of the Navy’s most grand warships, Wednesday beginning at 9 a.m.
Roger Wilders Sr., a design engineer with Gryphon technologies, will give a Powerpoint presentation on his work designing ships for the U.S. Navy.
Guest speakers will also include Staff Sgt. Terry W. Gates, U.S. Army recruiter, Badger Boy and Girl Jake Hipke and Maggie Crum, and Langlade County Veterans Service Officer Dale Oatman on the flags and what they represent.
There will be plenty of music as well, including the elementary and high school choirs, and bands and the fourth through sixth grade hand chimes choirs.
FOREST COUNTY
The three public school systems in Forest County will also pay homage to veterans on Wednesday.
In Laona, the public is invited to a 10:15 a.m. program in the gymnasium, followed by lunch.
Wabeno School will begin its program at 9 a.m. in the high school gymnasium. Earlier in the morning, veterans are invited for refreshments and classroom visits.
Veterans Day in Crandon will begin with a 7:30 a.m. breakfast followed by a program at the school. A brief ceremony will also be held at 11 a.m. at the Memorial Building in the Courthouse Square. The day will be capped with a dinner at 6 p.m. in the Community Building.
