Sun comes out, but snow still around Oct. 13, 2009 There wasn’t much melting going on in the Antigo area today.
After a snowfall of about three inches Monday, temperatures approaching noon were 34 degrees and the wind chill was 29, hardly the mix for ending an early dose of winter.
Local children were manufacturing snowmen during the storm.
While the snow kept coming, the ground temperatures were warm enough that the flakes only survived on grassy areas and melted from driveways, highways and most streets.
In Antigo and Langlade County there were no weather related accidents, but one of the sheriff’s deputies noted that early today Highway 45 in Oneida County had been salted but in Langlade County the road was a little slick.
In neighboring Oconto County a 24-year-old man died today after his vehicle left an icy overpass on Highway 141.
Authorities said he was ejected from his pickup truck after it left the road and rolled down an embankment.
The National Weather Service said that the high reading here on Monday was a freezing 32 degrees and during the nighttime hours it dropped to 21 degrees. The compares to an average high temperature of 57 degrees and a low of 35.
One year ago today the high temperature was 79 degrees.
