White Lake to show school improvements

Sept. 23, 2009

The White Lake School District, the smallest of the three in Langlade County, certainly isn’t lacking in pride or accomplishments.

The district will host an open house Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. to show what it has done in the past year to improve facilities for its students and staff.

Principal Bob McCune reflected that pride today offering a news media tour of the school, showing the improvements and some of the older areas of the complex that were in classroom use until the close of the 2008-2009 term.

The district was facing a number of facility issues during the past several years.

The offices and reception area were simply in the wrong place and the wrong configuration. The staff found it difficult to monitor movements through the main school entrance, there were troubles with records storage and offices for the superintendent, William Fisher and Principal McCune.

McCune explained that what started as concerns over the office, rest rooms and a few other areas, led to the remodeling effort.

“The bathrooms for the students were not good,” McCune said, pointing to the new rooms with new fixtures, tile with even an artistic flair. There is also the flow of water in the sinks that comes automatically when hands arrive.

The French classes, which were held in the oldest part of the complex, were moved to a more modern classroom, and the new mathematics teacher cleared out and put a former storage room into use as a classroom for instruction and laboratory projects.

McCune explained that some things absolutely needed to be done, including the classroom shifts, reorganization of the office and replacement of the rest rooms. And in the process other things came along including excitement from the student and the staff.

McCune noted that the lighting in the school’s historic gymnasium has been changed to become effective and at the same time, greener.

“If there is no one in the gymnasium moving around, most of the big lights are shut down,” he said, suggesting the change will offer a great savings.

Student council members will be among those providing the tours.
