Langlade County boulder graces front of Ice Age Trail headquarters in Cross Plains Sept. 12, 2009 Langlade County geology is on prominent display at the new headquarters of the Ice Age Trail Alliance in Cross Plains.
According to Joe Jopek, a longtime Ice Age Trail organizer and enthusiast, staff at the state headquarters requested each of the 21 trail chapters to furnish an engraved boulder for landscaping the new office building completed in February.
In April, chapter volunteers Lee Auner, Brian Jopek, Stanley and Steve Koss with the cooperation of Tom Lazers located and retrieved a very special boulder from along the Old Railroad segment of the Ice Age Trail. The county boulder was then hauled after the organization’s annual meeting at Merrill to Cross Plains.
All boulders from throughout the state were then cleaned and engraved before the July 18 dedication ceremony of the new office.
A late summer hike on over approximately five miles of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail’s Kettlebowl segment, which winds through some of the county’s rugged glacial landscape, is being held today.
One more hike is scheduled this year on Saturday, Oct. 3.
