Legion dominates, heading to state Tuesday, July 28, 2009 Antigo’s American Legion Post No. 3 baseball team traveled to Minocqua Friday for the Regional tournament with a chance to advance to the state tournament on the line.
The Typhoon accomplished that goal with three dominating wins.
Antigo vs. Merrill
The Typhoon watched Merrill score two runs in the top of first.
Antigo collected a single by Nic Tatro to start the game, Justin Schroepfer drew a walk. Then back-to-back doubles by Jared Tomany and Phil Seis made it 3-2, Antigo.
The rally continued with Michael Wolter hitting a single and Cole Kuenzli reaching on an error. A single by Cody Schlicher expanded the Typhoon lead 6-2 at the end of one complete.
Antigo scored one in the second, three in the third inning highlighted by a Tatro double and a Michael Wolter home run to make the score 10-7.
Seis knocked a solo home run in the fifth, combined with seven runs tacked on in the sixth inning allowing Antigo to take game one with a 21-7 victory.
The Typhoon offense which banged out 22 hits was led by Tatro (double) ,Wolter (home run) and Schlicher (double), who each collected four hits apiece. Seis (home run) collected three hits and Tomany (double) and Kuenzli gathered a pair.
Manger Mike Ramer sent Tatro to the mound in this first game. He responded with a little help from Kuenzli (recorded one out) in throwing seven innings, allowing just four hits, issued 12 walks and recorded eight strike outs.
Antigo vs. Minocqua
Taking on Lakeland in the second game of the tournament, Antigo came away with an 11-5 victory.
Once again Antigo used a big first inning to take the 4-0 lead.
Silencing the Minocqua bats, the Typhoon continued it’s lead into the fifth inning stretching the gap 6-0. Minocqua fired back by adding three in the bottom half to cut the distance 6-3.
Unable to reach home in the sixth, the Typhoon regained momentum, scoring five in top of the seventh to win 11-5.
Collecting nine hits, Antigo was led by Schroepfer with three hits in four chances. Phil Seis added a pair including a home run in the fifth.
Taking the mound for Antigo was Jared Tomany. Going a solid five innings before being relieved by Kuenzli, the pair surrendered 12 hits, gave away four walks and record nine strike outs.
Antigo vs. Merrill
The American Legion team made its run at state with a 15-5 win over Merrill.
Antigo started out the game with two runs in the bottom of the first and four in the second inning, highlighted by a grand slam home run from Justin Schroepfer.
Michael Wolter collected three runs off of his home run in the fourth inning allowing Antigo to cruise on to state with a 15-5 win.
Using three pitchers in the game. Ramer started with Chase Kuenzli, brought in George Monk in the third and closed out with Cole Kuenzli.
The trio combined in allowing eight hits, granted nine walks and fanned four.
The Typhoon collected 13 hits in the Championship Game.
Leading the attack with two hits each were Schroepfer, Tomany, Seis, Wolter and Cole Kuenzli.
State Bound
The Typhoon’s record stands at 15 wins versus 10 losses heading into the 2009 Wisconsin State American Legion Class AA Tournament Friday in Appleton.
