White Lake board closing in on budget, property taxes to increase July 23, 2009 Residents of the White Lake school district can expect to see property taxes for local schools to increase 8.6 percent under a 2009-10 budget that is approaching its final form.
At the regular monthly meeting this week, Administrator Bill Fisher said that the district will receive a 15 percent reduction in general state aid payments from the state and that means local taxpayers will be footing more of the bill.
Following the receipt of the state aid numbers, Fisher said the district is anticipating a levy of $1,993,230, an increase of $158,051, or 8.6 percent.
The mill rate is expected to reach $10.59 per $1,000 of equalized valuation, a 35 cent hike. That means that the owner of a $100,000 piece of property will pay $1,059 in local school taxes, a $34 climb.
The levy hike is far less than last year, when voters at White Lake approved an 18 percent increase to keep the district operating.
Fisher said that many budget numbers remain unclear, and the numbers may continue to fluctuate up to the district’s annual meeting, which will be held in October rather than the traditional August.
In other matters, the board heard reports from the policy, and building and grounds committees and reviewed summer construction projects, including the remodeling of the school office.
Eight staff members gave a presentation on the Model Schools Conference they attended in Atlanta, Ga. and they presented a report on how they plan to incorporate some of those ideas at White Lake.
“They had a chance to learn from some of the best practices in the country,” Fisher said.
The single action item involved the resignation of George Maule as boys’ basketball head varsity coach. Maule, who has accepted a job at Stockbridge, has served in various capacities with the district for decades and his resignation was accepted with regret.
