Area communities planning big doings for July Fourth, fireworks scheduled July 2, 2009 The northwoods will be sizzling with Independence Day events this weekend.
The celebrations actually kick off Friday night with a fireworks extravaganza set to music in Birnamwood.
But Saturday will be the big day with parades and parties in Antigo and White Lake along with smaller fireworks shows spread across the lakes region.
ANTIGO
The Antigo/Langlade County Chamber of Commerce will host the Independence Day celebration here, kicking off with a 6 p.m. parade with Jack Strasser as parade marshal.
Chamber executive Deena Grabowsky said over 60 units are expected, ranging from Badgerland Classics and Customs cars and trucks to families, horses and even alpacas.
“We would love to have everyone come out with their lawn chairs and sit and enjoy the parade,” Grabowsky said.
Units will line up at Antigo Middle School and travel down Edison Street to 10th Avenue and then west to the high school.
Fireworks sponsored by the city of Antigo will follow at dusk.
“It promises to be a great afternoon and evening of family entertainment,” Grabowsky said.
WHITE LAKE
The biggest celebration in the area takes place in White Lake on Saturday, where events stretch from 8:30 a.m. to well after dusk.
The day opens with the 1 mile Possum Run at 8:30 a.m. followed by the popular 10K event at 9:10 a.m.
The parade kicks off at noon rain or shine. It will be led by the Legion and VFW color guard with Fritz Buettner as grand marshal and Hannah Baginski as poppy princess. The White Lake band will perform and there will be numerous club, family and civic entries.
After the parade, the action switches to the pavilion for music by the Grudgeville Grass from 1 to 4:30 p.m. and Purposeful Grimace from 5 to 9 p.m.
The White Lake Fire Department and American Legion will serve beverages and the Wolf River Fire Department will have a corn roast and raffle. The Booster Club will also serve food and the Crocker Hills 4-H Club will be dishing up ice cream.
There’s more as well including soda served by the Ladies Auxiliary and St. Matthew Church; light sticks sold by Troutland Rescue; bakery by Four Corners Assembly of God; corn dogs by the VFW; cheese curds by the White Lake Historical Society; and a fish tank by the Lakes Association.
The Wolf River Chapter of Trout Unlimited will serve shore lunch and smoked salmon and the Presbyterian Church will have slushies.
There will be a boat parade at dusk with fireworks at about 9:15 p.m.
ANIWA
The community’s annual fireworks show will be held at dusk on Saturday. There will be food, refreshments and music by a deejay throughout the day.
BIRNAMWOOD
The ninth annual Birnamwood fireworks show will take place Friday at the Birnamwood ball park.
There will be food, music and refreshments starting at 6 p.m. and a huge fireworks show set to music at dusk. Brogan Resch will sing the national anthem beginning at 10 p.m. followed by the playing of Taps by Ray Lemke and a 21 gun salute.
ELCHO
The town of Elcho will continue a very long-standing tradition when it shoots off fireworks Saturday at 10 p.m. over Otter Lake.
ELDERON
The 33rd annual July 4th celebration will take place at McNulty Park in downtown Elderon on Saturday.
There will be a parade at 1 p.m. and music by the Drovers at 2 p.m.
The afternoon will also include food and refreshments, games, prizes and bingo.
PELICAN LAKE
There will be plenty of opportunities for Independence Day fun just to the north of the Langlade County line.
The Mecikalski Stovewood Museum will host its annual brat roast Saturday at the Schoepke Town Hall in Pelican Lake. There will be coffee and bakery starting at 8 a.m. Brats, potato salad, beans and homemade pies will be served from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Craft items are also being sold.
On Saturday evening, Christian’s Campground located south of Pelican Lake will shoot fireworks at dusk.
For those who can’t get enough of the Fourth, Gerrits Lakeview Inn on the lake’s south side will have fireworks on Sunday at dusk. A band will play classic rock starting at 8 p.m.
PHLOX
Phlox will host its 33rd annual men’s semi-fast softball tournament Friday through Sunday at the Norwood Ball Park.
There will be food and refreshment along with fireworks Saturday at dusk.
POST LAKE
The Post Lake Improvement Association will celebrate its 50th year with fireworks at dusk on Saturday over Upper Post.
